Sandy
bays, high cliffs and sheltered creeks fringe England's second smallest
county. The Victorians built forts along the coast to guard against
invasion from the Continent, and Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made
the island their summer home. Osborne House designed by Prince Albert
in the 1840s for his wife, with the private apartments exactly as the
queen left them when she died in 1901. The island capital of Newport
is at the head of the River Medina, with the old docks sheltering pleasure
craft and a quayside warehouse.
